Stakeholders perspectives on the usability of land cover and land surface change information

Solving today’s complex land and resource management problems requires information about land cover and land surface change. Many important activities and decisions, ranging from managing public lands or monitoring post-disaster recovery to developing coastal land use plans or creating policies for endangered species, rely on the land cover data.   

NCAR and the USGS EROS Center are collaborating on a project, “Developing 21st Century Approaches for Land Cover Change Data Visualization and Dissemination”. We are hosting a 2-hour virtual stakeholder workshop to better understand the use of land change information in land and resource management, planning, and policy. The workshop will include a brief presentation about the land cover and land surface change data and science products available from the EROS Center and a series of interactive collaborative activities. 

Participants will engage in:

• breakout group discussions on how land change information is used in their organizations, 

• outline existing challenges in data access and use, and 

• offer their recommendations on how to improve usability of land change data and products for practitioners. 

The information gathered in this workshop will be used to better communicate land change science to a broad range of stakeholders and to design a 21st Century land change data visualization tool in support of land and resource management and planning decisions.
